THIS WEEK |
NATO’s role in European security is becoming visible in the technology pipeline. Seven DIANA development contracts connect counter-drone innovators with military users, while SHINE’s operator-led trials test whether emerging systems work together. Ukrainian battlefield experience is helping shape that process. The opportunity for dual-use companies is to bring evidence that a customer can use. Ukraine’s industrial demand is accelerating. FPV contracts are already 54% above the whole of 2025, according to Sunday’s Defence Ministry announcement. The EU has also disbursed another €1.24 billion for Ukrainian-made weapons. Our original analyses and graphics explain the manufacturing challenge behind the numbers: components, acceptance and cash flow have to support repeatable deliveries. This week brings an immediate financing deadline and two focused drone-technology meetings. Our 12-18 October calendar covers the EDIP Ukraine call on Tuesday, DRONTEX and EUDIS, alongside AUSA, EIC and EDA. The EIC session is for already registered participants. Five current employer vacancies complete this issue. |

| 01 | Companies & technologySHINE: from a pitch to an operator test. NATO’s Innovation Continuum links problem definition, scenario design, integration and user evaluation. JATEC brought Ukrainian experience into logistics and sustainment. We explain why the resulting evidence is more commercially useful than a polished standalone demonstration. Sentinel-3C’s first measurements. Europe’s satellite-data continuity is the bigger story: new colour observations and radar measurements must fit the record that users already depend on. Our diagram separates the published instrument results from the remaining commissioning work. |

| 02 | Policy & marketsEurope spends more but still buys in separate lanes. EDA records €418 billion in 2025 defence spending, while collaborative equipment procurement reached 24% against a 35% benchmark. Our chart shows the 11-percentage-point gap and what fragmented orders mean for factory economics. Ukraine’s larger drone order book. We separate FPV contracting, wider drone categories and deliveries instead of combining unlike measures. The industrial question is how suppliers turn stronger demand into a dependable production rhythm. |

| 03 | EventsSix dates for 12-18 October: the EDIP Ukraine deadline is 13 October; DRONTEX runs 14-15 October in Slovakia; EUDIS runs 15-17 October across eight onsite locations. | 04 | From the fieldMarcin Mycielski on Polish Radio: the conversation follows the gap between a promising technology and a solution that can actually be deployed in Ukraine. It brings the market-entry discussion back to users, implementation and the work required after a demonstration. A new UK-Ukraine business route in Kyiv. Our coverage examines what an institutional business centre can contribute to partnerships and where companies still need to do their own commercial work. |
|
| 05 | Funding & opportunitiesThe €1.24 billion Ukrainian production payment targets drones, interceptors, drone ammunition and missiles. Our graphic keeps remaining defence financing separate from budget support, making the industrial opportunity easier to assess. EDIP’s Ukraine production calls: the €180 million missiles, ammunition and bombs call closes 13 October. The separate €80 million unmanned-systems call closes 16 February 2027. Use the current call documents for eligibility and submission requirements. |
