THIS WEEK |
Welcome to the first MSSG News briefing. Last week brought a new Finland-Ukraine defence cooperation agreement, a report on maritime data exchange and a reminder that a public announcement has several possible next steps. The useful question for industry is what each announcement actually commits its parties to do. The same distinction runs through technology stories. EU OPEX begins in Portugal today with military users and increasingly complex trials; participation is an opportunity to produce operational evidence, not a purchase order. In space, ESA's Phoenix work moves a servicing concept forward, while Sentinel-3C still has to pass commissioning and calibration before its data service is fully useful. This week has an immediate deadline: the European Defence Fund's two SME routes close on Tuesday, 29 September, at 17:00 Brussels time. We have also picked out events worth planning for and five recently added employer vacancies at the end of this issue. |
| 01 | Companies & technologyThe EU OPEX campaign brings developers, soldiers and users into one experimentation setting. What matters after a trial is a clear account of the task, the version tested and the integration work still outstanding. ESA's Phoenix contract raises a parallel engineering question: how to turn rendezvous and docking work into a future service for satellites already in orbit. |
| 02 | Policy & marketsThe Finland-Ukraine Drone Deal opens routes for technology transfer, joint development and manufacturing. It does not name a buyer or order; Patria's separate letter of intent with General Cherry is an industrial lead to follow, not evidence that production is contracted. Our guide to EDA collaborative procurement makes another useful distinction: a joint buying process begins with participating governments and their requirements, not with a general grant application by a supplier. |
| 03 | EventsLooking beyond this week's OPEX opening, the EUDIS Defence Hackathon runs on 15-17 October in eight countries; teams need to check the registration route and conditions of their chosen host. The Malmö defence summit follows on 27-28 October, with early-career professionals on the programme and a registration link now available from the organiser. |
| 04 | From the field MSSG original interview frame, September 2026. From our earlier MSPO reporting: conversations with OMAG, Octava Defence and Ekolot show why a prospective Ukraine partnership needs an agreed decision-maker, evidence and timetable. These are individual interviewees' experiences, not a survey of the market. |
| 05 | Funding & opportunitiesThe urgent item is the EDF SME deadline on 29 September: research and development proposals follow different rules, budgets and co-financing needs. For a longer planning horizon, the EDIP Ukraine industrial-capacity call closes on 13 October; its missiles-and-ammunition scope should not be confused with the separate unmanned-systems call due in February. Check the official call documents before submitting. |
