Galileo OSNMA: authenticating a message does not remove interference
The service helps compatible receivers check navigation data. It does not guarantee reception when a signal is jammed.

Galileo’s Open Service Navigation Message Authentication, OSNMA, allows compatible receivers to verify the authenticity of navigation messages. EUSPA provides service documentation and implementation guidance; the initial operational service began in July 2025.
The distinction matters for companies advertising resilient navigation. Message authentication and resistance to radio interference solve different problems. A valid message cannot help a receiver if the necessary signal is unavailable.
A product description should identify whether OSNMA is implemented, which receiver and software version support it, and how the application uses the result. The presence of a Galileo-capable chip is not, by itself, evidence that every authentication feature is enabled.
Ask what the product actually checks
Our assessment is that buyers should ask for an understandable description of the receiver’s behaviour when authentication is unavailable or fails. Does the application flag uncertainty? Does an operator see a warning? The answers should be documented at the product level, without publishing information that would help someone defeat the system.

Do not collapse different claims into one
A navigation solution may combine several sources and integrity checks. Each needs its own evidence. Authentication of transmitted data, continuity of reception and the reliability of a complete position solution are related but distinct claims. An unqualified promise of protection against all spoofing or jamming would go beyond the purpose described for this service.
Integration is an operational decision
The user interface and fallback policy are part of the implementation. In a logistics application, an uncertain location should not silently become a confident record. In an industrial application, the system owner needs to decide how uncertainty affects the supported process. OSNMA can contribute to that design; it does not make the design unnecessary.
